"The Head Start Program is a valuable program to ensure that all children have an opportunity to be better prepared to enter the k-12 education system. As a life-long educator I have seen the positive results of the Head Start Program on children entering kindergarten."
- Jr. Bettelyoun, Former Director, Indian Education, Rapid City Area Schools
The 28,500 square foot facility houses 12 classrooms, indoor and outdoor play and garden areas, offices and support spaces for infants, Early Head Start and Head Start programs. In addition, the new energy-efficient facility includes administrative spaces, meeting spaces for community, parents and staff, kitchen and laundry facilities, speech therapy and "sick bay" space, and secure drop-off and pick-up zones. The layout, spatial details and design are in keeping with Head Start standards and best practices and have been considered state of the art for Early Childhood Education in the Rapid City community. The building opened in January 2019.
The total cost of construction was approximately $5 million, with an additional $2.2 for land and improvements. We have approximately $100,000 left to raise to retire our mortgage.
We knew as we built it that the need for our services would continue to grow. For that reason the building was designed with expansion in mind, with end walls and electrical and plumbing features constructed to easily link to new construction. We intend to launch a campaign later this year to add 4 additional, much-needed classrooms!
